Goethe Universitaet, Frankfurt; 6Saitama University, Saitama Schottky Mass Spectrometry (SMS) is frequently used for mass and lifetime measurements at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR). This method is non-destructive and can be sensitive to single stored ions with a charge q > 30. This has offered the possibility to perform Single Ion Decay Spectroscopy (SIDS) where, for example, the orbital electron capture (EC) decay branch of hydrogen-like (Hlike) I, Pr and Pm has been investigated [1, 2]. Such a method requires a good sensitivity, i.e. a proper time resolution with an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore a new dedicated resonant Schottky pick-up with higher sensitivity – by a factor of about 100 – has been developed and installed in spring 2010 at the ESR[3, 4]. The combination of this new detection system with a proper spectral analysis based on the multitaper method [5] has led to very successful results for SIDS experiments. Figure 1 illustrates the achievement of the method as the example of an EC-decay of a single H-like Pm ion.

Beta and gamma decays

1 Simple Fermi theory of beta decay 2 Beta decay is one of the most easily found kinds of radioactivity. As we have seen, this result of the weak interaction leads to conversion of a neutron into a proton or vice versa, with the necessary charge change being made possible by the emission of a positive or negative beta particle (positron or electron). To ensure conservation of lepton number, eac...

Generation and Detection of a Directed Monoenergetic Neutrino Beam with Hydrogen-Like Ions

We consider two possible schemes for generation and detection of a monoenergetic directed beam of neutrinos which may have application to neutrino communication. First, we consider generation of a directed neutrino beam using electron capture beta decay in hydrogen-like ions. Next, we suggest detection of a directed neutrino beam using resonant absorption of a neutrino by a bare nucleus with th...

Monoenergetic neutrino beam for long-baseline experiments.

In an electron capture process by a nucleus, emitted neutrinos are monoenergetic. By making use of this, we study how to get a completely monoenergetic neutrino beam in a long-baseline experiment.

Ion detection from beta decay and two-body decay experiments with laser-cooled atoms

Localized and cold samples of atoms produced with laser cooling and trapping techniques are a powerful tool for nuclear β-decay experiments. Recently we have concentrated on measurements of the momentum of the daughter ion produced, which leads to a variety of new observables. Angular distributions of the recoils with respect to the nuclear spin in β decay are sensitive to non-standard model in...

Abrupt rise of the longitudinal recoil ion momentum distribution for ionizing collisions.

We report on the experimental observation of an abrupt rise in the longitudinal momentum distribution of recoil ions created in proton helium collision. The details of this structure can be related to electrons traveling with the velocity of the projectile [electron capture to the continuum (ECC)]. The longitudinal as well as the transverse distribution of the recoil ions can be explained as a ...
